Kdouloň / Quince

Kdouloň obecná (Cydonia oblonga) je běžně používána jako podnož pod hrušně, oslabující jejich růst a urychlující plodnost, ale je také ovocným stromem sama o sobě, i když ovoce potřebuje úpravu. Kdouloň má nicméně dle mého rovněž úžasnou estetickou hodnotu: jarní květy se světle fialovými tyčinkami, na dotek příjemné plyšové listy, velké, žluté, voňavé plody, tak pozitivní na pohled, podobně jako u citrusů. Kdouloň roste jako malý strom nebo keř a prospívá na chráněných, slunných místech a v dobrých půdách. Tvar plodů, vhodných k provonění šatníku, se různí od kulovitého po oválnější. Bohužel v mém případě hodně prosychá, takže už ji nepěstuji.

Common quince (Cydonia oblonga) is widely used as an understock for pears, weakening their growth and fastening the crop, but it is also a fruit tree itself, although the fruit needs to be prepared. Nevertheless there are great aesthetic merits, too: spring blooms with light violet stamens, plush leaves nice to touch, large, yellow, fragrant fruit, so positive to look at like citrus fruit does. Quince makes a small tree or a shrub, thriving in sheltered, sunny positions and good soils.  Shape of fruit, suitable for perfuming laundry, varies from globular to the oval one. Unfortunately, in my case, the branches dry out a lot, so I don't grow it anymore.

Kopretina 'Becky' / Shasta daisy 'Becky'

'Becky' je nejlepší zahradní kopretina, co znám. Narozdíl od planých kopretin (Leucanthemum vulgare) nepoléhá. Její květy jsou větší, rostlina dosahuje výšky asi 80 cm, je vitální, začíná kvést začátkem července a kvete velmi dlouho. 'Becky' je křížencem různých druhů kopretin a tito kříženci se označují jako Leucanthemum x superbum. 

'Becky' is the best garden Shasta daisy I know. Opposed wild ox-eye daisies (Leucanthemum vulgare) it doesn't lie down. Her flowers are larger, the plant is app. 80 cm tall, vigorous, starts flowering at the beginning of July and flowers for a long time.  'Becky' is a hybrid of various Shasta daisy species and these hybrids are called Leucanthemum x superbum.

Winchester Cathedral (syn. AUScat)

Když jsem si pořizovala tento kultivar, obdržela jsem exempláře ze dvou školek. Jedna z růží dávala větší, narůžovělé květy, které velmi rychle odkvétaly, a druhá květy velikosti střední až menší, plnější, čistě bílé barvy. Pokud se někomu stalo něco podobného a cv. Winchester Cathedral mu kvete narůžověle, doporučuji podívat se ještě po jiném exempláři. Samotný keř pak dosahuje výšky kolem 1,2 m a je tedy vhodný do středu záhonu. Růže dobře remontuje a její vůně bývá popisována jako mýdlová nebo podobná krému Nivea. Kultivar je sportem Mary Rose. Winchester Cathedral už nepěstuji z důvodu její náchylnosti k černé skvrnitosti.
When I was buying this variety I obtained plants from two nurseries. One of the roses has blooming with larger, pinkish, fast fading flowers and the second one with flowers of medium to small size, fuller and pure white coloured. So, if somebody of you has the same problem with pinkish colouring I recommend to look after another specimen from a different supplier. The shrub reach height about 1,2 m and so it is useful for the middle of the bed. Rose reblooms well and its fragrance can be described like soapy or similar to Nivea hand cream. The variety is a sport of cv. Mary Rose. I don't grow Winchester Cathedral any longer because of her blackspot suceptibility.

Inspirace pro výsadbu bez trávy / A Non-Grass Planting Inspiration for a Courtyard

Tato středozemní výsadba z jednoho provensálského hotelu v Gordes se skládá  z oleandrů, tvořících zadní kulisu, a dál například z Pittosporum tobira  cv. Nana, levandulí, svatolin, tymiánů and hebe, pokud jsem je určila správně a co jsem byla schopná určit. V mých podmínkách bych použila třeba vyšší kultivary střemchy vavřínové na pozadí a pak levandule, svatoliny a tymiány (jen na místa v zimě suchá nebo s perfektní drenáží), Buxus sempervirens cv. Suffruticosa, Melissa, zakrslé jehličnany, Spiraea japonica nebo bumalda, Prunus laurocerasus cv. Piri, Ligustrum vulgare cv. Lodense nebo třeba Erica.

This Mediterranean planting from one Provencal hotel in Gordes consists for example of some oleanders, creating the back screen, Pittosporum tobira  cv. Nana, lavenders, santolinas, thymes and hebes, if I recognize it right and what I am able to recognize. In my conditions I would use for example tall cultivars of Prunus laurocerasus for the back and then choose from lavenders, santolinas (only for places dry enough in winter or with superb drainage), Buxus sempervirens cv. Suffruticosa, Melissa, dwarf conifers, Spiraea japonica or bumalda, Prunus laurocerasus cv. Piri, Ligustrum vulgare cv. Lodense and Erica.
